THE UPTOWN
The Uptown Theatre first opened in 1927 as a single-screen movie palace and quickly became a cornerstone of South Utica. Known for its Gothic Revival design and iconic marquee, it served generations of moviegoers before closing in 2012.
In 2017, a group of Utica natives and entertainment industry professionals came together to save the building and reimagine it as something new: a creative home for live performance, comedy, and arts education.
Today, the Uptown Theatre for Creative Arts (UTCA) is a growing hub for improv, theater, music, and community-driven events—and the home of Uptown Improv Co and the annual Uptown Improv Festival. From classes and shows to festivals and workshops, it’s a space built for people to take risks, connect, and create together.
The Uptown Improv Academy is part of that mission—bringing high-level training into a space designed for collaboration, growth, and performance.
